The Cathay Pilots Union was formed on 1st May 2005 with one of the prime objectives being to support our colleagues in their pursuit of just and fair treatment. The colleagues we're referring to are known as "The 49ers", following the termination on 9th July 2001 by Cathay Pacific Airways of 49 pilots. Their story has become one of the longest industrial disputes in aviation history, and is recounted here.

In 2005 the HKAOA elected to cease legal and welfare funding for any 49er who chose not to accept "the offer" that was then available. Originally only 4 of The 49ers had wanted to accept "the offer". With the withdrawal of support by the HKAOA, they were left with few choices:

The remaining 18 pilots, with the help of The CPU, are seeking justice. They include the estate of Greg England, who died on 29th January 2002.

The Cathay Pilots Union has extremely low overheads - we retain no professional staff or services and all work is undertaken by volunteers. Consequently, 100% of accrued funds has gone to the legal support of The 49ers.

We seek funds from members and non-members alike - individuals or organisations. Membership is open to all Hong Kong pilots.

Anyone can donate. Donations may be cash, cheque or Standing Order, by Internet banking or ATM deposit.
